CHAPTER EIGHT

Christian

My pulse quickened. “It’s him.”

I almost couldn’t believe how simple it was to lure Holston in. Phoebe was right. All we needed to do was create the right opportunity. It left us exposed, but even if we lost the factory, taking Holston off the board was worth it.

This was what I’d trained for. Hour by meticulous hour. Year after year. It was finally time to unleash myself. My father wouldn’t be able to hold me back any longer. When he died, I would be in control of everything. All my dreams were about to be realized. I only wished Edward was here to see it.

Rubbing my brother’s face in my glory would have been monumental.

Phoebe was back in the shadows. Her neon pink suit would have been too visible if she stepped forward. She stood behind me, smug and self-assured, as if this were any other night. It wasn’t. I watched her cold, assessing eyes and wondered if trading one master for another was worth it.

With the resources I was about to gain, there would be time to move against Phoebe and her master.

That time wasn’t now.

“Are you ready?” Phoebe whispered seductively from her perch in the shadows.

I sauntered toward her, pulled her into my arms, and kissed her. “I’m always ready.”

“There will be plenty of time to celebrate after you accomplish what Winestone has asked you to.” She nibbled lightly on his lip and stepped away. “I’ll deal with the other one.”

The other one was the problem. My father had a protégé, someone he’d trained to help him. It should have been me. We could have worked together to achieve our goals. Instead, he’d defected to the losing side. What kind of madman joined the losers? I’d never even consider leaving the winning side. Winning was all that mattered. Expanding, controlling, and ensuring our base of power was secure. I wanted it all. Killing my father was the first step.

Then, I’d find a way to take everything. I wasn’t the kind of man who could live on a bent knee. One person would wind up with ultimate control, and it would be me. I’d sacrificed for the moment. When it came, I wouldn’t miss it.

I never did.

“Do you still think it’s her?” Phoebe was under the absurd notion that my father’s cohort was my wife.

Phoebe’s smile reminded me that she took pleasure from delivering pain. “It doesn’t matter what I think. We will know the truth soon enough.”

My instructor was suspicious of Mercedes. Didn’t like her one bit. I thought it was because they were so much alike. Both were strong, independent women who didn’t take shit from anyone.

The major difference between them was that Mercedes was a healer. She liked to fix things. She couldn’t kill people. Her life’s purpose was to make sure no one died. She told me about things we could do to help others all the time. Sometimes, I even gave in to her whimsical desires.

The reestablished clinic in the lower city was one such folly.
